FeedBack Video

Here is a video of some peer feed back about my digi pack. The three students all look at my CD cover and my advertisement and answer some questions for us. Some of the feed back was positive which I can use to improve my work and other parts were ideas on how I can make them better.

A positive from all the feed back is that the genre is shown through both pieces of work. This shows that the research I have done into the genre has worked and I have pulled out the correct conventions needed to make my piece seem professional for my genre.

Another positive is that the colour scheme seems to work as well. The feed back seem to show me that they like the blue as it is a calm and relaxed colour.

However, it could be improved with some of the locations that we have used, as said in the video "they seem a bit random" this can he,p me because I know that I should try and have a strong theme that can link the locations together making seem more professional.

Teacher Research Assessment

Here is a teacher assessment that I have been given. I have been given an A for my research so far. As you can see it is a low A and there is a lot of work that I can do to help improve my research to make it a stronger A.

Peer Planning Assessment

This is my peer assessment that I have been given back. I got a B on my planning so far, and my target is an A. This means I will need to step up the detail in my work and try new ways to make my work creative and visual for the audience to look at.

15. Photo Shoot Plan

Photo Shoot Plan-2

Here is my photo shoot plan, it is showing you what days we will take pictures for our Cd cover design and our advert design. I have also wrote the locations and who will be needed for the days that I am taking pictures for. This will help so that there is no confusion to when we are filming. I will take both pictures on the 17th of november as the locations are quite close and it will not take long to take the pictures.

12. Shooting Schedule

Shooting Schedule

This is my shooting schedule, it allows me to see the days that I am filming on. By having this schedule it allows me and my group to know when and where we are meant to be. It also tells us the equipment is needed so that one member of the group and book and collect it for the right day. The notes section is a little bit of information that we are not quite sure on yet. So on the 14th November we may need to filming after school if the drama room isn't free during school hours.

As I went through filming I could see that the days I had set out were not going to be enough to film everything. This then meant I had to make more dates were we would go and film.

I made another five days which me and the crew would go filming on these are as follows:

17/11/2012
23/11/2012
30/11/2012
5/12/2012
11/12/2012

These dates meant that we could get more filming done. However once we was back and editing we still had some pick ups and need to go out and film these. I decided to allow three days to get these pick ups and these are as follows:

7/01/2013
17/01/2013
26/01/2013

14. Advert Design

Here is a draft for my advert design, I wanted to show the audience the artist so they could recognize him, I also wanted it to link with the CD cover design so I have added in the guitar and the colours I have used are similar. I also added in music notes, I thought this would be a nice way for the audience to remember the design.  When creating the advert I didn't put any text on, this is not conventional and after receiving feedback and looking at my research I realized that text on the advert needs to be on it so that the audience knows the artist name and the name of the album.

13. CD Cover Designs

Here is a draft for my CD cover design, as you can see I have chosen to use the same background colour, this is because when I was looking at other professional CD covers they were the same colour throughout. I wanted to show the artist so I use two pictures of my artist. I also showed instruments from my genre, this will give the audience a hint to the type of music that it is if they aren't sure on who the artist is.

10. List of Props, Costumes, Make-Up

Prop and Costume List

Here is a List of my props and costumes that I am going to use in my music video. As you can see from the sheet there is no make up needed. I also say which location each item will be needed in. When we come to filming I can look at this document and see where I will need the costumes and props for. This makes it a lot easier for me as I don't have to look through lots of paper work or try and remember the information it is clear and simple to read on this one document.

18.Track Permission

Here is a email that my group and I have sent to Atlantic Records to ask permission if we can use their artist Ed Sheeran's song for our music video.

16. Location Permission

This is a short power point that shows I have asked for access to all of my locations.

17. Talent Release Form

Here is a document that shows I am allowed to film the artist performing his song. With out this document the artist could turn round mid filming and say he quits. This gives me the proof that he has agreed to let me use him and film him in my music video. This is a simple sheet each is very important to the process as it gives me the safety that the artist has to be in the music video.

11. Location

For my music video I wanted to have a range of different locations. This would allow me to have as much footage as I possible could. As my song has a quick pace I want to be able to edit quickly with the beat. I have chosen to do this as I think it will make my video look professional as my research showed me that music videeos cut on the beat. And the most successful music videos have three or more locations. I have chosen to have three locations, a dark room, a conservatory and walking on the street. These locations are very different and will help keep the audience interested in the music video.

Street:

The first location is on the street, this will help tell the audience the narrative of the music video. I want to give the idea that the artist is sad and lonely as this will help the audience understand the message behind the song. This location will make the artist seem down to earth as he will be walking the streets like every other perosn. We will also see performance shots on the street. This will allow me to have a lot of footage of the artist lip-syncing so that the audience can see the talent that he has. It will help make the video successful as it will seem to the audience that it is professional.

Dark Room:

The second location is in a dark room, in this location we will see mainly performance shots of the artist singing and playing his instruments. The dark from will tell the audience that the artist is lonely feels sad. This will give the idea of love loss to the audience. I will also use this as another location but I will change the set of the room. I will use the second set to get more narrative and concept shots in. I will use it to show the artist making the origami birds and the dark setting with help set the mood and get the message across. It will also give me more footage to use when editing.

Conservatory:

This is the final location I will use, in this location the audience will see a mixture of performance and narrative shots. The audience will see him lip-syncing and playing his instruments, and we will see him looking out of his window which will give the message of the song across. I will also use the location to show some of the origami birds, in this location the birds will blow away through the conservatory doors.

As I started to film and started to edit the footage I started to see that the locations were not quite working so I came up with some new locations which you can see below.

Here is my first location, Brick Lane. I thought about this as it is very narrow and the roads get very busy which will look good in the video as the artist walks past them. This location also has side roads which are not as busy which means we can get two different types of shots with this one location.

9. Storyboards

Here is a short video of me and my group making our storyboards. As you can see we are spliting up the work so that we can get the work done quicker. We talked about the type of shots we want for each location and then we each took charge of doing something to help.

Here are my storyboards that I have made to help me make a professional and successful music video.

Here is my animatic, it is a video that shows what my music video will look like once it is all done. I took pictures of my storyboard and put them in the order I wanted. I then cut each shot down so that you can see how long each shot will last. This is roughly how I want my music video to look, there may be slight changes in the video if I change my mind on a shot or if a shot doesn't work as well as others.

Here are still images of my storyboards:

6. Image Annotation

creator gif

Here are some of the clothes and objects I will use/ need in my music video. I have chose these clothes because based on my research this is what the artist in this type of genre wear. I thought I would stick to this convention as the rest of the music videos I have viewed are all successful so this may help mine be successful.

4. Song Details

Ed Sheeran "Little Bird"

I chosen the song "Little Bird" because it matches the genre that I have chosen which is folk rock. It doesn't already have a music video. I feel that it has a strong message/ meaning which will make it a perfect song to create a good professional music video to. It will allow me to get the message across to the audience with the video as well as with the song.

5. Lyrics Annotations

These annotations show some of what I think the meaning of the song is. It also shows some ideas that I could use in my music video such as locations and costumes. I have used Goodwins theory of illustration, so when we talk about the artist crying I have said that I could perhaps have a close up of even an extreme close up of the artist crying.

The video below shows some possible ideas for the music videos, it shows some of the ideas for location, costume, shots and what the lyrics mean to the audience.

Peer Research Assessment

This is my Peer feed back for my research. I got a B, and my target is an A therefore I need to start to go into more detail linking it to other parts of my research like using the theories in other posts.

3. Technical Tutorials

Green Screen:

Below is a short music video that we created to help us get use to the green screening. It has helped us in many areas and opens the door for us to use the green screen in our final music video. We had to set up and take apart the green screen as well as the lights that are used to go with it. Then we edited the video using final cut and using this we manged to remove the green and place in a picture of our choice. Although the video isn't the best quality it has still allowed us to practice with the screen.

Creating this music video has given me many new skills such as:

Using the green screen effectively both on camera and editing.
Setting up the lighting to go with the green screen.
Setting up and taking down the green screen appropriately.
How to use final cut to edit with the green screen using chroma keyer which is an effect in final cut.
It has also shown me how to add in an image to the video so it look professional.

Photoshop:

Here is a video showing some techniques that I have learn't on Photoshop.

In the video I am taking a picture and making the lady in the green the main focus. To do this I use motion blur on the whole picture which makes everything blurry. I then use a mask which allows me to draw around one object/ person so that they are not effected by the motion blur. Then I play with the Hue and Saturation of the image to help give it some better colour and make it seem that the women is more important then the rest of the people around her.

These skills help me and my group create a practice CD cover for our chosen genre. Below is the CD cover we made using Photoshop.

The key features of our CD cover are:

  • We used and research into record labels to find a suitable label which produces the genre of music that we have chosen. Our research indicated that Sony Music Entertainment was a successful record label for our genre. The image of the record label had a white background but we removed this using the magic wand tool.
  • We took pictures of the artist of the album, as it was a practice the clothes he is wearing isn't quite what we will use but they were close to the costume for the genre we want. Using Photoshop we took out the background so that it is just the artist standing there.
  • The backgrounds used are pictures of instruments from the genre that we have chosen, on the right side (front) we see a guitar and on the left (back) we see a drum kit. These are both instruments that our audience said they would expect to see in our music video. We had to shape the images to the right shape using Photoshop's free transform tool.
  • The font of the text used matches the type used on other albums that we found during our research. We used Da Font to help find this font, we then made it stand out to the audience so that it is clear and easy to read. Photoshop allows us to put the font straight in and use it.
  • A list of songs on the album is also seen on the back of the album as this is a convention of albums, we used the same font and colour for the list of songs and for the title as we wanted to make the cover seem professional and our research showed us that fonts are kept the same on ever CD cover.
  • We then added in other small items such as the barcode, writing on the spine and the record label logo on the spine. These small things are conventions of CD covers, and without them the finished piece wouldn't seem professional.

1. Initial Ideas

Here is a mind map that me and my group created, it shows different conventions that we first thought about when thinking about what to do for our music video.

First we wanted to think about the genre of which we would focus so we made a list of lots of different genres that we knew. We then took a vote on what everyone wanted to do. We narrowed it down to Indie, Rock and Folk Pop. This then allowed us to start to think of artists who we could use to find the easiest genre for our group. After we had thought of the different artists we decided to go with Folk Pop. The artists we chose for this genre were Mumford and Sons, Ed Sheeran and Jame Blunt.

We then thought about watching some of their music videos to get an idea for the types of locations and costumes that we would need to put in our music video. Chinos, hoodies and trainers came up a lot in the music videos which made us think that these are a main convention of the genre. The types of location that appeared were the countryside, empty streets and near the coast. This have given us ideas to what we can do.

We then notice that in each music video the artists had instruments, we thought that this would be a good idea as it would make our video seem more professional. After that we start to talk about different songs that we could do, the songs we came up with were; James Blunt- Beautiful, Ed Sheeran- Little Bird, Ed Sheeran- Drunk, Mumford and Sons- Little Lion Man.

2. Roles

Here is a short video that explains the different roles that me and my group will be taking up.

To decided who would do each role we thought of all the roles that there were and we looked at who would be the best at them, we then split them up evenly so everyone had something to do and one person wouldn't get over stressed having to do it all on their own.

20. Audience Research 2

Here we can see from my audience that the majority are female, this could be that I should aim my music video at a female audience rather than a male audience.
This pie chart is showing the age range and we can see that 57% of the audience were 17-19. This will help me when making my video as I can aim it at my age group.
This graph is showing me that 26% of people we asked preferred folk rock music, this helps me because I wanted to do a folk rock music video and now I know that most people prefer it to other genres.
This question was asked about folk rock music videos and it is telling me what costumes most people would expect to see in folk rock music videos. As we can see it is indie clothing such as chinos and shirts.

This graph is helping in the making of my music video because I know that my target audience will be expecting to see a lot of close ups and some mid and long shots. This means when making my music video I can use these shot types to keep my audience happy.
This bar chart helps show me what type of artists my target audience like. As we can see from the results that Ed Sheeran is the favoured artist followed by Mumfrd and Sons. This will help me make a decision on which artist to chose as I know that my audience will like a song from Ed Sheeran or Mumford and Sons.
This pie chart helps tell me what types of instruments I will need to get, this will help make my music video successful because my target audiencnce expect to see these instruments, most people want to see guitar and banjos in the video as they are seen in the genres music videos.

This chart is showing me what the audience want to see on the cover of the album. From the results we can see that the mostcommon album has the name of the album on, and a picture of the artist with his/ her name. By using these results I can make a album cover for my song and it will be aimed at my target audience as they have told me what they want to see on it.
My target audience have also given me type of effects that they wold expect to see in my genre music video. The top two effects that my target audience want to see are slow motion and filters and from my other research I have seen that these two effects are used commonly in my genre of music videos. They have also given other effects to think about such as overlays and the use of colour.

Overall, my target audience have given me a lot of information to take in and I know who my ideal audience member would be. They would be female, aged 17-19, they enjoy folk rock music and like to listen to Ed Sheeran and Mumford and Sons. My target audience have also given me the type of costumes and effects that I should use in my video to help me make it successful and look professional. They have also helped me by telling what type of instruments I should use to make it look likle a professional piece of work. My research has also told me what I should put on album cover, things such as a picture of the artist and their name, also the name of the album.

19. Audience Research

This is my servey about folk rock music genre, it will allow me to see what different people expect to see in folk rock music videos. This will help me make my music video as I will know what my target audience wants to see. It also allows me to see their favourite artist from the genre so it could give me ideas to who and what song I chosen to do.

18. Advertisement Research

As we can see from the advertisement there isn't much we can say about the location. He has chosen not to show us a location in the advertisement because he could have wanted to keep it simple so that the audience didn't have to think about the message or meaning behind it. It also allows him to have this orange filter over the advertisement, Ed Sheeran is known for being ginger and he has chosen to embrace this and has made it the main colour of his album and the advertisement to go with it.

In this album cover we have been give a location, the genre for this album is country, folk rock, which is told to us by the location used. It seems like they are standing in a farm or a field which would reinforces the idea that their genre is folk rock as as the audience we would think of a farm or a field when we think of locations for folk music.

These are different advertisements used to promote new albums in the folk rock/pop genre. As we can see there are some differences and some similarities in the advertisements. The similarities in the advertisements are that they all have the artists in them, they all have the name of the artist and the name of the album in clear easy to read writing. They all tell you something about the price or where you can buy it from. However, only one shows the website of the artist for the audience to find out further information. Only one shows a list of songs on the album, two show what the album looks like. They all use similar text, white and fading away. Ed Sheeran's is a lot brighter then the other two advertisements

15. Genre Research 3

The conventions of my chosen genre are:
  • Indie Clothing with a modern take on it, such as leather jackets and shirts etc.

As you can see in this clip from James Blunt 1973, we can see that he is wearing these indie clothes and they match the type of music he is singing. We can also see the indie folk clothing from the clip of Mumford and Sons Little Lion Man. These are the type of clothes that I will be looking to wear in my music video as it suits the genre. The type of clothing worn is very fashionable at the moment which is why they would be wearing it as it would allow the audience to connect to the video.
  • Close ups of lip syncing

As you can see Mumford and Sons use the close up of lip syncing to show the passion and facial expression in the face. If we saw this in a mid or long shot the audience wouldn't be able to see so much detail in their face. We also see the clip from Ed Sheeran Lego House where he also lip syncs and it helps show the audience it is in time and it looks like he is singing it even though Ed is singing and Rupert Grint is lip syncing
  • Long Duration Shots

As we can see in Ed Sheeran Small Bump shot duration is quite long, and this works well with the pace of the song, most of the songs I have looked at are quite slow paced and gentle which makes these types of shots perfect as the track in doesn't make the audience so bored, where as if the shot was still then it would be a boring shot and the audience would move on. We also see another long duration shot in James Blunt 1973, it also has a camera movement which doesn't make it seem that long as it keeps the audience interested. This helps create a sad mood as the long shots seem to slow us down and make us feel sorry or worried.

  • Slow Motion

Again from Ed Sheeran Small Bump we can see that slow motion is used when the little girl is running, this effect was also used in other videos that I have researched, which shows to me that with slow songs, slow motion could be a good idea. Also at the start of Mumford and Sons Winter Winds we see more slow motion which makes the audience look into more detail to what they are running from and why. This also helps the mood as they can slow the mood down and make us feel worried or make us feel sad.
  • Instruments

When listening to my genre I could here the same types of instruments used, and I thought they would be key to making a successful music video in my genre. So this clip from Mumford and Sons shows the type of instruments that I will be wanting to use. We also see instruments in Mumford and Sons The Cave, this time they aren't played by the band but it's the instruments we would expect.

These are the main conventions of my chose genre, as you can see from my examples that they are used in different artists videos and if I want to make a successful music video for the folk rock genre then I have to looking to use these conventions in my own work. The different conventions are also used to help create a different mood or feeling for the audience.

16. CD Cover Research

Conventions of a music CD Cover.

Here is the CD cover from The Script:

In this album cover we don't get to see a location, this keeps the audience in the known, it also keeps with the abstract hands as the audience may not understand what the meaning of the hands are. Having no location can be mysterious and makes the audience think about why there is no location. The artist have chosen to show us these hands. The front of the album is to hands holding each other, this could be telling the audience that the band are close friends and that they are one with each other. It helps show the audience how close they are.

Here is the CD cover for James Blunt:

The font used is very stylish and exciting, he could have used arial which would have made it seem formal and boring, by using this font it shows the audience that it is an exciting stylish album which is not formal and therefore is great to buy. The location for the album isn't very clear as we are not seeing a main focus from the area he is in. We would suggest that it is in a different country as the color of the house and the type of trees surrounding the house. By him using this different country he could be trying to tell us in a discretely that he has gone to this place to get away with his kid and the album will help us get away if we need to.

Here is Mumford and Son's CD cover:

When first looking a the images you may think about where they are and why they are there. We would think of them as being abstract, but once we look into them we can start to pull out different bits of information. The shop we see is in London, this could tell us that the artist are British and are proud of this. It could also tell us that this is a high quality album as London is one of the worlds most important capitals.

As you can see in all three CD covers there are very similar conventions such as the abstract images which link to the album by a song or a message, the fonts used are all unique and exciting. The information that is given is mostly the same. Things like the record company and the list of songs on the album appear. There is always a bar-code on the back of the cover. However on the Mumford and Sons CD cover the artists appear on it, this doesn't happen on the two CD covers. This could be because Mumford and Sons are not as well recognized  by the public yet so they want to try and get their name associated with them and their faces. But even when they appear they look like shop dummies, which still gives off the confusing strange feel about it like the abstract places and objects used on the other CD covers. The covers help shape the audience perceptions to the artists, this will help sales for the artist as the audience will want to hear the music after seeing the CD covers.

13. Genre Research 1

Mood Board This is my mood board, as you can see there are some artist from the genre I have chosen. There are also some of the instruments that are used in folk rock music. This mood board will allow me to know what i will need to create a successful folk music video.

11. Theories 3

An example of Illustration would be the music video Friday by Rebecca Black, this is a good example as when she is singing we see a shot of the lyric, when she says "wake up at 7:00 am" we see an alarm clock showing 7:00 am. Another example in this video is when she sings bus stop we see the bus stop sign, there are many more examples in this video.

Foo Fighters Learn Too Fly is a good example for Amplification as the whole band dress up as different character and sing there song. They are in role as different characters on this plane singing there song.

As you can see the characters take on many roles such as pilots, passengers etc. They make the roles comical so the audience know it is them and the audience can have laugh at them.

An example of Disjunction is Katy Perry Last Friday Night, in this video we see Katy take on a new role, she dresses differently to how her fans would expect her to. In this video Katy can use this technique because everyone knows who she is and what she looks like, so when we see her like this we are shocked, but if they didn't know who she was it wouldn't have had the same effect because the audience wouldn't of known what she normally looked like.

12. Low Budget Ideas

From Watching these two music videos I have learn't that if you are filming a fast paced music video of any genre then you need to have fast paced editing which matches the beat of the of the music itself. This will help your video look like a professional video.

I know that the location and costumes you use have to be chosen with great care, as in "Just Got Paid" if they didn't wear suits and fashionable clothes the video wouldn't have been so successful. Also with this video the locations are key with the studio and nice house as it makes it seem like a real boy band music video.

There are a lot of camera shots and angles used in both of these videos, from extreme close ups to extreme long shots. This is key because it keeps the audience entertained, because if they were seeing the same five shots over and over again they would get bored easy, also what happens in the shots changes which is also key.

In the "Ah-Ha" music video colours are key, the reds and blacks used really make the video seem professional and were filmed. It makes the audience entertained, and the colours help tell the audience what type of genre the music video is.

8. Conventions Of A Music Video

Close-ups- Are used to show facial expressions and to show the lip syncing.

Mid-shots- Are used to show some lip syncing but mainly to show action.

Long-shots- Shows action and they story line of the video.

Extreme-long-shots- Show the location of the video.

Lip-Syncing- This is used to show the audience that the artist is singing the song in the video.

Effects- These are used to make the video interesting.
Montage-Editing- This is used to show a long period of time in only a few minutes or seconds.
Continuity-Editing- This is used to show the audience the story line.

Camera-angles- These are used to help show status and it makes the video interesting.

Camera-Movements- These help the video entertain the audience.

Props- These are used to entertain the audience but also instruments are used to play the song.
Costumes- These help the story line progress and makes the situation clearer for the audience.

Lighting- This is used to help set the mood or help show what is happening in the scene.

7. Analysis Of Rock Video 3 - My Chemical Romance "I'm Not Okay"

6. Analysis Of Rock Video 2 - Green Day "Basket Case"

5. Analysis Of Rock Video 1 - Blink 182 "All The Small Things"

4. Analysis Of Pop Video 3 - Train "Drive By"

Location:

In this music video there are two main locations, The first is in the city and it is an apartment. We see this shot as a mid shot and the city is behind the main character. The city is normally seen as a busy stressful place and by the expression of the character we can tell that he isn't happy. The second location is in the countryside where we see it as a big, open free space. The character seems happier in this location. There is a big comparison between the location as one is all buildings and no grass, and the other is all grass with no skyscrapers only small cottages.

 Clothes:

In the video there is a lot of characters, some more important then others and the main characters are wearing very stylish clothes which will get the audience to see them and think that that is the style so the audience will copy the video and wear the same clothes as the characters in the video. The main man has a black leather jacket  with black jeans and the main female wheres a black leather jacket too and she wears a summer dress under her jacket.

Cinematography:

There are many shot types in the video, most of the singing is performed in a close up or mid shot, but there is a use of long shots and extreme long shots, when the cars are driving we see them in long and extreme long shots, we also see the countryside in long shots which shows the audience that it is free and open unlike the city. There are also camera angles used in the video. The best example of this is when he pulls up in his car at the end and he looks up at her, this is down in many films as it is giving the female the power because he was in the wrong by leaving her.

Props and Effects:

There aren't many props in the video but the main one throughout the video are the cars used. All of the cars used are very stylish and colourful. Lighting blue and yellow and red are used to grab the audiences attention. The models of the car are also very cool and wanted by the audience. It makes the man seem as if he is wealthy and stylish which means the audience will want to be like him. There aren't many effects in the video either, with only a couple of flares used to exaggerate the sunshine to the audience, and there are some filters used to make it seem more yellow/orange again to exaggerate the sunshine to the audience, it makes it feel much more happier and warmer for the audience.

Continuity/Montage Editing:

The video is in continuity editing with bits of montage as we start with on the phone but then having flashbacks of the past of how he and the woman were close together and had a good relationship, during the flashbacks we cut to present times of him driving to meet the women, and after the final of the flashbacks he arrives at a country club where he tells the women how much he loves her.

Concept/Narrative:

The music video is about a man that has an argument with his girlfriend driving to find her, as he is driving to meet her he is having flashbacks of how things use to be between the two of the in the past. By time he finds her at the country club he has found some people from a car convention and has brought them along to tell her how much he loves her and how he is sorry.
