15. Genre Research 3

The conventions of my chosen genre are:
  • Indie Clothing with a modern take on it, such as leather jackets and shirts etc.

As you can see in this clip from James Blunt 1973, we can see that he is wearing these indie clothes and they match the type of music he is singing. We can also see the indie folk clothing from the clip of Mumford and Sons Little Lion Man. These are the type of clothes that I will be looking to wear in my music video as it suits the genre. The type of clothing worn is very fashionable at the moment which is why they would be wearing it as it would allow the audience to connect to the video.
  • Close ups of lip syncing

As you can see Mumford and Sons use the close up of lip syncing to show the passion and facial expression in the face. If we saw this in a mid or long shot the audience wouldn't be able to see so much detail in their face. We also see the clip from Ed Sheeran Lego House where he also lip syncs and it helps show the audience it is in time and it looks like he is singing it even though Ed is singing and Rupert Grint is lip syncing
  • Long Duration Shots

As we can see in Ed Sheeran Small Bump shot duration is quite long, and this works well with the pace of the song, most of the songs I have looked at are quite slow paced and gentle which makes these types of shots perfect as the track in doesn't make the audience so bored, where as if the shot was still then it would be a boring shot and the audience would move on. We also see another long duration shot in James Blunt 1973, it also has a camera movement which doesn't make it seem that long as it keeps the audience interested. This helps create a sad mood as the long shots seem to slow us down and make us feel sorry or worried.

  • Slow Motion

Again from Ed Sheeran Small Bump we can see that slow motion is used when the little girl is running, this effect was also used in other videos that I have researched, which shows to me that with slow songs, slow motion could be a good idea. Also at the start of Mumford and Sons Winter Winds we see more slow motion which makes the audience look into more detail to what they are running from and why. This also helps the mood as they can slow the mood down and make us feel worried or make us feel sad.
  • Instruments

When listening to my genre I could here the same types of instruments used, and I thought they would be key to making a successful music video in my genre. So this clip from Mumford and Sons shows the type of instruments that I will be wanting to use. We also see instruments in Mumford and Sons The Cave, this time they aren't played by the band but it's the instruments we would expect.

These are the main conventions of my chose genre, as you can see from my examples that they are used in different artists videos and if I want to make a successful music video for the folk rock genre then I have to looking to use these conventions in my own work. The different conventions are also used to help create a different mood or feeling for the audience.
